Masquerade Ball Fundraising Gala & Candace 15th Annual Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon 2019
Annually, NCBW-SNJ recognizes the achievements of African American Women in our community. This year, NBCW-SNJ had their first Masquerade Ball Fundraising Gala with over 300 guests gathered to introduce our seven honorees. The Gala was held on March 9, 2019 at The Mansion in Voorhees, NJ.
The honorees were recognized and honored at the 15th Candace Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon, “Honoring our Past; Acknowledging our Presence; Claiming our Future”, held on April 7, 2019 at the prestigious Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill, NJ. Candace continues the legacy of highlighting the contributions of Black Women in our community. Seven phenomenal women were recognized from the areas of Arts & Culture, Community Services, Communications/Media Relations, Economic Development, Spiritual Leadership, and Science and Technology. The swearing in of eight new members was witnessed by members, guests and honorees.
Honorees were invited to a reception at the Gala and enjoyed a festive evening where they were introduced. At Candace, each honoree was given an opportunity to share their journey and the underlying theme was “do not give up”. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Chery, one of our newest members of NCBW-SNJ, further inspired the honorees and guests by reminding us that sometimes in order to move forward, “we must get angry”.
The attendance of 405 community members participated in the combined Gala and Candace Awards celebrations.
Educational Opportunity for NCBW-SNJ Membership Legalized Gaming Control Commission
Activity Goal: The goal was to learn more about the Legalized Gaming Commission in order to maximize the chapter’s fundraising potential. This aligns with National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Southern New Jersey Chapter to increase their knowledge and understanding of 501c3 requirements. Legalized Gaming Control Commission (LGCC), Robert Harden, Investigator of Legalized Games of Chance, presented to our members the New Jersey State requirements for licensing to include the filing of an application and the reporting requirements for conducting games of chance. Games of chance include raffles, silent auctions, bingo, and other fundraisers. Mr. Harden discussed the following: the registration process with LGCC, the application process on the state level, the required applications for the townships where the actions will be held, having a dedicated bank account for fund-raising purposes and proceeds, violations, compliance/noncompliance behaviors, and municipal and state fees and fines. He also discussed prohibited prizes, in addition to on-premise and off-premise action and then took various questions from the floor. He provided a handout as a reference.
Outcome: This learning experience met its goal of educating the NCBW-SNJ members on how the LGCC Board protects the stability of the gaming industry and the importance of organizational follow-through and compliance on stated policies. The membership was elated to have a state representative visit so they could learn first-hand the intricacies of the process. Unanimously, the seminar was very well received.
2019 Leadership Conference Retreat
Activity Goal: The goal was to educate members of the local chapter in real time on National initiatives. Five members of our chapter attended the 2019 Leadership Conference in Oakland California. This leadership conference was rich in content and encouraged us to “LEAD With A Purpose.” As always, the leadership conference is special to us and this year the conference really created a perfect call to action.
Outcomes: As a result, our chapter programs, our interaction with legislators and the community have matured. Our opportunity to participate in live action packed learning activities and dialogue at the conference helped to advance our programming, partnerships and sponsorships; all of which has helped to make a difference in the communities that we serve. We continue to practice what was conveyed at the leadership conferences and are very proud of being a part of this progressive organization. We are certainly proud of where we are headed. Our personal thanks to all of the National Leaders is forever present.
