"It's All About You" Girls Summit
 

Our chapter has participated in the girls' health summit, hosted by DOT - Dreams of Tomorrow for several years. Topics such as HIV/Aids prevention, teen and unplanned pregnancy prevention and breast health were topics of discussion. For the upcoming event in October, 2014, our chapter will sponsor several girls as part of our mentoring initiative.

Through participation in the summit, girls will be empowered to celebrate their individuality, uniqueness, and worth, endowed with a drive to achieve their biggest dreams and reach their full potential, and will be equipped with the motivation to overcome obstacles and fulfill their purpose in life.

This free health event, supported and co-sponsored by the Monroe Township Department of Community Affairs, will focus on preserving African American generations by making a conscious effort to stay healthy throughout the life span. Individuals from the community, including over 50 vendors with a focus on health care for the elderly, have been invited to participate.

Edge Mentoring© - First Touch Mentoring and Academic Support
 

The implementation of the First Touch Mentoring and Academic Support program was postponed until September 2014. Our chapter is partnering with the Winslow Township School District to provide mentoring to ninth grade students. First Touch mentoring and academic support (under its EDGE© Mentoring Program) for incoming 9th grade students, is part of the Winslow Township High School, School Based Youth Services Program, beginning September, 2014, and continuing through August, 2015.

The program will deliver the following services to the identified 9th grade students:

  • one-on-one mentoring
  • academic support through tutoring and small group instruction
  • exposure to college through college tours and seminars/workshops
  • cultural outings and events
  • seminars and group discussions on health related topics and resources

First Touch will have three major goals:

  • to enhance student academic success as evidenced through high school graduation in four years (2) to provide resources and tools to prepare students for entrance into post-high school employment or higher education in a community college or university (3) to develop long term, positive relationships with the selected students and help them realize their potential and build a foundation for a productive future.

"Rising to the Top" Class of 2014 Scholarship Laptop Computer Presentation Ceremony
 

Our chapter hosted a special ceremony at the Deptford NJ public library to present the laptop computers to our scholarship winners. With standing room only, our recipients received their computers in front of family, friends, elected officials, service organizations, and members of NCBW. Each recipient received a proclamation or letter of recognition from her local township.

Featured as a guest speaker, NJ Assemblywoman Gabriella Mosquera, urged the young women to take risks and to make a difference in the world. Quoting from President Theodore Roosevelt, Assemblywoman Mosquera admonished the young women: "The credit belongs to the [woman] who is actually in the arena�who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if (s)he fails, at least fails while daring greatly..."

Monroe Township Memorial Day Parade
 

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Southern New Jersey Chapter was invited and honored to participate in the Monroe Township Memorial Day Parade. This was the first time in the history of the township that NCBW-SNJ Chapter members were invited to participate in this well recognized and well attended community event and tradition. The parade commemorates the memory of men and women of the United States Armed Forces who lost their lives defending our rights to life, health, liberty, education and the pursuit of happiness and economic empowerment. The parade concluded at the Veteran�s Memorial Park where there was a dedication to active military, veterans and fallen heroes.

The Health committee sponsored a 5 K Run/Walk to promote awareness and prevention of obesity. The event featured a 3-mile run or walk around a local park in Gloucester County, NJ.

"Learn, Grow, Achieve, and Making Proud Choices" Junior Human Relations Commission Conference
 

NCBW-SNJ continues to partner with the Camden School Based Youth Services Program, and was invited to participate in the end-of-year conference of School Based Youth Services (SBYSP). The purpose of the program is to enable students to build character, develop leadership skills, and maintain awareness of cultural diversity, tolerance, bullying and violence prevention, and civic engagement. The program also utilizes peer-to-peer education to increase responsible decision-making among students around issues of sexual health, and the teenage pregnancy and parenthood.

The "Making Proud Choices" curriculum was introduced to all students attending the conference.

Women Empowering Women
 

This event highlighted three successful entrepreneurs, each of whom presented her story of how she got started in business and offered concrete examples for women to follow their dreams. Two representatives from Mutual of Omaha presented a workshop on becoming debt free, and a senior level manager from Lia Sophia shared the power of owning one�s own business and becoming financially independent. An opportunity for questions and answers, as well as one-on-one consultations, occurred at the end of the presentations.

NCBW, Inc. National Legislative Days on Capitol Hill
 

Legislative Days is an opportunity for NCBW members to meet with their Congressional leaders to discuss key issues important to NCBW, Inc.'s National Agenda and the communities, particularly in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment that impact women of color. The day begins with an advocacy training and breakfast, followed by presentations by congressional leaders on Capitol Hill. NCBW-SNJ Chapter Congressional Leader, the Honorable Donald M. Payne attended this event and Chapter members were able to meet with him to discuss local issues concerning the community.

International Women's Day
 

Our chapter dedicated the March monthly meeting to celebrate International Women's Day 2014. Members were invited to share information about the dress, food and lifestyles of women in nations other than America. In doing so, members were encouraged to speak about a place near and dear to them; ideally a nation she has visited.

Two of our members who were born in Caribbean counties (Jamaica and St. Kitts), shared some of their customs, food, and attire.
